about

DeepMatter is proud to announce the new EP from south London based songstress Stella Talpo; first burn.

Born in Italy, raised in Singapore and now living in London, Stella Talpo has become a one-to-watch due to her ability to shape and mould R&B sounds with her own unique concoction of influences. Having been on the alternative soul scene for a few years, Stella has become a sought-after name following the release of her debut EP ‘Space’ in 2016.

Stella’s latest track ‘mona’ highlights her ability to paint pictures through her lyricism, backed by the rich sound (of acoustic guitar and bongos) from, Angolan artist Bonga’s protest track, Mona Ki Ngi Xica. Inspired by her favourite book ‘The Alchemist’ by Paolo Coelho, ‘mona’ is about the voice in the back of your mind. The one that we sometimes ignore or wonder what would happen if we gave heed to it instead.

Speaking on the track, Stella said: “‘mona’ is our life’s dance with our destinies. It’s about divine intervention pushing us towards a destiny that not even we might think we’re capable to pursue. It’s about intuition, pilgrimage, personal transformation, surrender and the art of letting go of what we think our journey should be to give space for our true purpose to reveal itself.”

Inspired by artist ranging from Frank Ocean, James Blake and Rosalia through to Kanye West, Stella is drawn to music that is fearless and honest. A thoughtful and considered lyricist, she finds inspiration across themes of philosophy, politics, human behaviour and culture, adding further texture to her sound and lyricism.

Having spent many years of her childhood moving around, Stella initially felt disconnected from her birthplace of Italy, as her parents raised her in Singapore. Speaking on the experience Stella said: “I guess it’s the whole vibe of how much I yearned to go to the ‘real world’ that influences my music, this kind of sense of alienation and existentialism that I was imparted with because of this third culture, very sterilised and separated society that I was trying to form my identity in.”

Now based in South London, Stella relishes in the cities multiculturalism and ever-changing fountain of influences, giving her the ability to create authentic and soul-baring music. A keen reader, Stella absorbs herself in literature and poetry in order to broaden her knowledge and also has a keen interest in topics of mental health and self-development.
